The Communications Workers of
America Local 30248 was first chartered in 1902 and is one of the longest
serving Unions in Ontario. Known as "The Peterborough Typographical Union"
it was formed to represent composing room workers at the Peterborough Examiner.
The local now represents workers at daily newspapers throughout central
Ontario and has two bargaining units of Child and Youth Workers and Social
Workers at a Children's Mental Health centre in Oshawa and Whitby. Affiliated
with The Newspaper Guild (TNG) and the Communications Workers of America
(CWA), Local 30248 is part of one of the largest Unions in North America
representing over 600,000 workers in public and private sector employment.
